2016 TOTC Classes & Training Schedule

TOTC has an all new training schedule for 2017!
All Courses are 6 classes per session.

TOTC trains at Lucky Dog Training Center, on County Road 1134 - the Old Chandler Hwy.

Pre-registration is highly recommended. All classes have minimum and maximum size limits. See below for the maximum class size and current status. Be aware that if a Class is too small, we may need to cancel. Fill out a Class Enrollment Form, attach your current vaccination certificate, and mail it with your payment at least 7 days prior to the class start date to: TOTC Class Enrollment, PO Box 7396, Tyler TX 75711-7396. If a class has been filled with pre-registrations, we will accept additional registrations on the day of the class on a “standby basis” if a pre-registration drops out. If you want to attend class on standby, bring your class enrollment form with you to the first class session.

All classes start on time. On your first night, please arrive at least 15 minutes early to register. The first night you bring your dog, please arrive at least 15 minutes before class time to acquaint your dog with the surroundings.

Obedience:

Puppy Socialization: A puppy socialization class for dogs under 4 months of age. Class teaches owners how to communicate with, discipline and train their puppies and includes instruction on basic puppy behavior issues. Puppies are encouraged to play but are also taught basic obedience such as sit, down, stay and go for a walk. Owners should bring a nylon or leather collar & leash, a favorite toy and soft treats for training. A 6-week class that enables the pup to earn the AKC S.T.A.R. Puppysm distinction. Minimum Class Size = 3. Maximum Class size = 12.

4-8 month Puppy: An introduction to obedience for young dogs who aren't quite ready for Pet Manners but are too old for our Puppy Socialization class. Class teaches owners how to communicate with, discipline and train their puppies and includes instruction on basic heeling with lots of games and fun things to do. Puppies are introduced to basic obedience commands such as sit, down, stay and heeling. Owners should bring a nylon or leather collar & leash, a favorite toy and soft treats for training. We will also introduce “bucket drills” to handlers and pups. We provide the 5-gallon buckets for you to sit on, but feel free to bring your own. (A sportsman bucket with swivel seat is ideal.) A 6-week class that prepares the pup and handler for the Pet Manners or Advanced Pet Manners class. Minimum Class Size = 3. Maximum Class size = 10.

Pet Manners: A basic dog manners class open to all ages. An all “on leash” class that teaches basic obedience commands such as heel, sit, down, stay and come. You will learn the best methods of controlling your dog in various situations, how to be around other dogs and people and how to communicate with your dog. Training collars(Martingale, buckle, or chain), leashes (nylon, leather, or cotton) and small, soft treats are recommended for better dog control. A 6-week class that can prepare your dog to take the AKC Canine Good Citizen® test. Minimum Class Size = 3. Tuesday Maximum Class size = 15. Thursday Maximum Class size = 10. NOTE: Unlike our Fall classes, you should bring your dog to the first class.

Advanced Pet Class: The purpose of the Advanced Pet Class is to prepare handlers and dogs that have a very limited knowledge of obedience handling to learn the fundamental skills of attention, heeling, fronts, finishes and recalls. Must have completed a TOTC Pet Session, passed the AKC Canine Good Citizen Test (written proof required), or have been tested to show knowledge of sit, down, stay, and recall. A 6-week class. Minimum Class Size = 3. Maximum Class size = 15.

Companion Dog: (Prerequisite is Advanced Pet Class) Introduction to competition obedience. Focuses on learning the basic exercises for the Novice Ring including dog attention, reliable recalls, reliable stays, elements of good on- and off-leash heeling plus how to train good fronts & finishes. Introduces fun jumping, targeting, play retrieving plus low-level distractions. The class develops your skills to earn a Companion Dog obedience title. A 6-week class. Minimum Class Size = 3. Maximum Class size = 12.

Skills: [Advanced Pet Class completion, or the equivalent training is a prerequisite.] A class for team building between you and your dog. Skills will be presented in a positive way to encourage your dog to learn to work in partnership with you. This class will be useful for competition as well as the average pet. Maneuvering, heel position, backing, send away, scent discrimination, retrieving and team building are among the skills taught. Teaching methods will include luring, shaping, targeting, and capturing. Clicker use is recommended but not required. Clickers will be available at class. A variety of high and low value treats are recommended. A 6-week class.
Minimum Class Size = 3. Maximum Class size = 10.


Rally:

Rally: [Advanced Pet Class completion, or an obedience or rally title on the dog is a prerequisite.] Introductory class to the sport of Rally. Handlers are taught the meaning of the rally signs, which they then practice with their dogs. A rally course is set up at the end of each class to practice the signs that were learned. Work is done on and off leash. Class prepares the handlers and dogs to compete in AKC Rally classes. A 6-week class. Minimum Class Size = 3. Maximum Class size = 12.


Nosework:

2017 Beginner Nosework (UKC, CWAGS): An all-new format for teaching UKC Nosework and CWAGS Scent Detective skills! There will be 5 progressive nosework classes. You must attend the prior class to continue on in the series. There will be one set of classes each session according to the TOTC calendar. All classes will be on Thursday nights. Class session 1 will start in January and session 5 will finish up in the Fall. All new nosework teams must start in January. The January class will be limited to 12 new dog/handler teams.

Advanced Nosework: [Prerequisite: A Nosework class with TOTC or the ability to test beyond a beginner level.] A class that will continue teaching the principles of searching, recognizing and alerting to target odors as well as preparation for nosework trials.

Introduction to Agility: [Prerequisite skills: the dog must have a reliable "come" and "stay" on a long line and walk on leash through a group of dogs and people without aggression.] This course will build upon the relationship between dog and handler, introduce the basic skills used to communicate with the dog, develop the dog's body awareness and motivation, and begin obstacle training. Training will start on-leash and progress to off-leash. Treats, toys, and play will be used for motivation. Come ready to have fun. Minimum class size = 3. Maximum class size = 12.

Basic Agility: [Prerequisite: Completion of the Introduction to Agility class or ability to test to the Intro level.] This course will further develop the skills introduced in the previous course and start training jumps, weaves, and contact obstacles. As students' progress, obstacles will be combined into sequences or short courses. Training will continue to build the dog's motivation and speed. Initial training of some obstacles may be done on-leash, but this course is primarily off-leash. Bring the toys and treat and plan to have fun. Minimum class size = 3. Maximum class size = 12.

Agility Play: [Prerequisite: Completion of the Basic Agility class or ability to test to the Basic level.] This class is for handler and dog teams that are not ready to compete or just want to work on foundation skills. Minimum class size = 3. Maximum class size = 12.

Intermediate Agility: [Prerequisite: Completion of the Basic Agility class or ability to test to the Basic level.] This course will continue to develop the relationship between dog and handler, the dog's drive and focus, the dog's obstacle competence and the person's handling skills. Obstacles will be combined into short to Novice level courses so skills can be practiced in motion. Yes, lots more toys and treats, and a positive attitude. Minimum class size = 3. Maximum class size = 12.

Competition Agility: [Prerequisite: Dog must be able to perform safely on ALL agility equipment at the Basic level.] This course prepares handlers and dogs for competition. All previous skills will continue to be refined and more advanced handling and training techniques may be introduced. Students will be taught to use course maps to plan their runs. AKC, USDAA, and CPE agility classes and rules will be discussed, as will how to enter trials, what to do when you get there, what those scores mean to you, and how to use this information to prepare for the next trial. Minimum class size = 3. Maximum class size = 12.

Heeling Class: (For TOTC Members Only.) Sharpen up your Heeling for the upcoming obedience and rally trials! Emphasis will be on attention, posture, position, and footwork.

Mini Advanced Nosework Seminar: (For TOTC Members Only.) Katie McCullough will be sharing information she has learned at two recent nosework seminars. Class is intended for those with a basic knowledge of nosework but is free to anyone to participate. Information covered will include search techniques and the properties of odor. There will be lecture and limited working time for dogs that are currently participating in nosework.

Trick Training: (For TOTC Members Only.) Tricks will be taught by members who will have 10-15 minutes to present their trick and how to teach it. This portion will last an hour. In the second hour, the instructors will be available to assist members with teaching their dogs. Member dogs will be allowed to participate and train in the second hour only. It's recommended that you bring plenty of treats. Clickers may be used.


Member Training Nights:

& Thursday evenings when no classes or meeting.

Member "On Your Own" Training: A special time for TOTC club members to come out to Lucky Dog Training Center and train, not necessarily within a formal class. TOTC Members wanting to work on specific problems or use the facility to prepare their dog for an upcoming show may come out and work on your own and/or get advise from advanced members/mentors. There is no charge to current TOTC Members. From time to time there will be organized workshops.


Canine Good Citizen Test Dates:

Canine Good Citizen® and Community Canine Awards: Tests are offered following the completion of the Pet Manners Courses. "CGC" and "CGCA" are award programs developed by the American Kennel Club that emphasize responsible ownership and the importance of a well-mannered dog. Passing all 10 parts of each test entitles the dog to receive a frameable award certificate and the right to wear CGC or CGCA emblems and tags. Trick Dog Performance Dates:

Trick Dog: AKC Trick Dog titles are official AKC titles listed on the dog's title record. Dogs must have an AKC, PAL, or AKC Canine Partners number to earn a title. To earn your Novice Trick Dog title (TRKN), you may choose 10 tricks to perform including Balance beam (walk on low board a few inches off floor), Bark on cue (“Speak”), Crawl (dog on belly, crawls at least 5 feet), Fetch it and give (ball, toy, etc- bring to handler, release), Find it (find treat hidden under cup), Get your ______. (Leash, brush, name of toy), Get in (gets in box), Get on (gets on low platform or step - 4 paws), Hand signals (down, sit, or come) ______, High five, Hold (3 seconds), Jump (thru a low hoop or over a low bar), Kennel up (go in crate, stay in until released), Kiss (point to cheek), Paws up (2 front paws on low stool or step), Push-ups (sit, down, sit, down, sit, down), Shake hands, Spin in circle, Touch it (hand or target stick), Tunnel (agility tunnel or child’s tunnel). Although training collars are not required, TOTC believes using these collars in Pet Manners, Advanced Pet, Companion, Advanced Obedience and Rally classes will assist you in your training. As a service, we offer slip chain training collars for $5, "toggle" slip chain collars for $10, 6' leads for $5, 15' leads for $10, and prong training collars for $20.
